Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia/Memory Loss  

Medicare data shows the percentage of Medicare beneficiaries age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease/dementia range from around 9% in Augusta and Frederick Counties to about 13% in Montgomery County and Washington, D.C.

The needs assessment expressed concern for support services for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or memory loss, as well as concern for their caregivers. Additionally, the lack of in-home services served as a major barrier in obtaining support services.

Newark Senior Center, Newark, Del.

Newark Senior Center serves more than 4,000 members by providing resources and opportunities for growth in body, mind and spirit. Newark Senior Center also provides caregivers of persons with dementia much needed respite time.

The Newark Senior Center’s Meeting of the Minds (MOM) program for persons with early memory loss. MOM is of great benefit to participants and their family members, however, transportation is a growing need. Impact1890’s $3,500 grant helped provide transportation services for 10 families in 2018. Virginia Tech Adult Day Services (VT ADS), Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia Tech Adult Day Services (VT ADS) provides adult day services on a long-term basis and offers intensive on-site learning opportunities for college students interested in geriatrics and dementia care.

VT ADS was awarded $8,000 in 2018 to help develop a program for older adults and their caregivers in the New River Valley to deal with Mild Cognitive Impairment, which often progresses to dementia. This early intervention program will allow older adults and their families and caregivers to incorporate lifestyle changes that will benefit them as cognitive impairment progresses. Read More
