Newark Senior Center (2018)
Newark Senior Center
Newark, Del.
Established 50 years, Newark Senior Center serves more than 4,000 members by providing resources and opportunities for growth in body, mind and spirit. Seniors can improve fitness, engage in life enrichment and socialization options and make use of transportation services. Additionally, caregivers of persons with dementia can take advantage of much needed respite time.
In 2015, the Newark Senior Center began the Meeting of Minds (MOM) program for persons with early memory loss. Meeting for 4 hours each day for 5 days a week, MOM is of great benefit to both participants and their family members. However, transportation has become a growing need. On the days when rides are not available, participation drops by 50%. The $3,500 2018 grant helped provide transportation services for an additional 10 families.
Chris, a participant in MOM, was being cared for by his wife. The fact that she was able to have Chris participate in the program meant that she was able to care for him outside of an institutional setting for an additional two years – due, in part, to the transportation services.
