Highland Food Pantry (2018)
Highland Food Pantry
Winchester, Va.
Begun in 1990 as an outreach program of Highland Memorial Presbyterian Church in Winchester, Virginia, Highland Food Pantry (Highland) became a separate organization as its program outgrew the capacity of Highland Memorial to be the sole support. Over 20,000 individuals receive food annually from Highland; of those, approximately 1,200 are seniors.
The 2018 grant of $5,000 supported the Special Delivery program that serves older adults in the Northern Shenandoah Valley who are food insecure and are unable to travel to the Pantry to pick up food. In addition to needing easy to prepare, high value protein food for the program, Highland Food Pantry will purchase durable bags to safely transport the food.
Highland Food Pantry provides more than food alone – it gives hope and personal dignity when hunger is no longer a constant worry. Although clients often express their gratitude, so do family members. One daughter stated: “I just want to say thank you for the food you deliver to my dad every month. He looks forward to getting his bag. He says: ‘Somebody does care.’”
