Valley Program for Aging Services

Waynesboro, Va.

Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS) provides a broad variety of home- and community-based services, including Meals on Wheels, personal care, case management, senior centers, health and wellness education, Medicare insurance counseling, home care services and transportation in the greater Staunton, Virginia area. Since 1974, VPAS has worked to help seniors successfully age in place.

Unless one has her or his own car in Augusta or Rockingham counties, transportation is generally unavailable; furthermore, needed services are often at a considerable distance. As a result, many seniors are unable to access basic services. The $2,500 2018 grant helped VPAS focus on two small communities to hire a driver and provide rides to seniors.

An older woman is dependent on a type of medical device that is prone to malfunction; she also has a number of medical conditions that require immediate medical attention when they arise. Her specialist is 35 miles away, as is the device repair service. She is unable to drive and depends on VPAS transportation services. Recently she sent VPAS a note, saying, “Thank you for all you do! You are on a short list of people who make my life possible.”
