Crossroads Community Food Network (2018)

Crossroads Community Food Network

Takoma Park, Md.

Crossroads Community Food Network (Crossroads) was founded in June 2007 as a seasonal farmers market with the mission of bringing local, healthy and affordable produce to an underserved area in Takoma/Langley Crossroads, Maryland. A primary purpose of the market is to educate low income seniors, often immigrants, about healthy food choices, while creating access to healthy food.

The $10,000 awarded to Crossroads was used to implement a new senior food security program at the market, Community Supported Agriculture. On a weekly basis, eligible older adults will be able to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at 25% of the normal cost, making it easier for them to eat the types of foods that lead to improved health.

Delores King, a senior market shopper and volunteer, says: “I love the people who work here and I get to meet new friends. And I love buying fresh fruits and vegetables at this market. And I get to find out about healthy eating. They tell you how to prepare the produce you buy. I most liked learning about the watermelon salad.”
